Laser or surgical eyelid skin removal, resurfacing and fat sculpting
In instances where there is excess upper or lower eyelid skin (dermatochalasis) or eyelid fat protrusion due to aging, Dr. Cockerham can combine surgical removal of the excess skin and fat, with resurfacing of the skin with the ActiveFx laser to achieve the most functional and cosmetically pleasing outcome.
In blepharoplasty (removing excess eyelid skin), an incision is made at your natural lid crease and the excess skin is removed. Sutures are left in place, and removed at either the 1 or 2 week visit. Your final result will not include incision marks outside of your natural lid crease. In patients without a natural lid crease, a lid crease can be made to be ethnically harmonious.
In fat sculpting, Dr. Cockerham will selectively remove areas of eyelid fat through the blepharoplasty incision to allow the eyelid skin to lay flat, but without the hollow look of too much fat removal. In some cases the fat of the lower lid is repositioned to improve eyelid contour. Laser resurfacing may also be needed to achieve optimal rejuvenation of the upper and eyelid area.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to eliminate brown spots and redness
Did you grow up loving your tan? Was baby oil your “sunblock”? While the sun is important in maintaining
our vitamin D levels and feels good, it can present us
with many skin problems. In particular, the sun’s uVA rays
can cause wrinkles, brown spots, broken vessels, redness
(rosacea) and even skin cancer. SPF ratings only refer the
uVB rays that burn and inadequate or expired sunscreens
contribute to the high incidence of related aging changes.
Using patented, state-of-the-art intense pulsed light therapy (IPL), commonly known as photofacial treatment, Dr. Cockerham can reverse a variety of sun-induced aging changes.
THE ABC’S OF IPL.
IPL gently draws the brown spots onto the surface of your skin with a special range of wavelengths. These areas will exfoliate painlessly in seven to ten days. Redness associated with rosacea is dramatically reversed by IPL. Dr. Cockerham has two decades of experience facilitating facial rejuvenation for women and men with sun-damaged skin. She has been selected as a Center of Excellence by Lumenis to teach other physicians the most advanced techniques.
DR. COCKERHAM USES IPL TO ADDRESS MANY CONDITIONS:
- Brown spots due sun or hormones
- Sun damage
- Skin discoloration
- Redness and visible vessels (acne, rosacea and other conditions)
TREATMENT IN LESS THAN AN HOUR WITH ALMOST NO DOWNTIME
IPL is an advanced technology that uses a broad spectrum of light and a variety of filters to safely treat skin discolorations. Anesthetic cream and a cooling gel are used to maximize effectiveness and optimize comfort. your treatment is completed in 20 minutes per area. Following your IPL, you can resume your normal activities immediately; a little sunblock and you are set to go. Results can vary, but three to six treatments are usually needed to achieve the desired look. Remember, IPL is not just for faces; this clinical tool can also be used on the neck, chest, back, arms and legs to combat age spots and other unsightly skin conditions.
EFFECTIVE IPL TREATMENTS REQUIRE SKIN FITNESS
Your face needs daily attention to maintain your new look. Topical medical-grade products (SKIN FITNESS) and lifelong protection of the skin from the aging and cancer (UVA) sun rays are crucial. Dr. Cockerham will create a personalized skin regimen for you before and after your treatment.
Call for a skin assessment and begin your skin renewal process today.
IPL technology improves the appearance of photo aged skin, removes age spots (sun-induced freckles), most benign brown pigments, and redness caused by broken capillaries through a process called photorejuvenation for face and body. The process is ideal for patients with active lifestyles because the procedure requires no downtime and has a low risk of side effects.

Spider Vein Treatment

Spider veins are small veins on the face, neck, chest, and legs that are caused by the vein valves becoming weak as we age. Other causes include heredity, hormonal changes in pregnancy, and sun exposure. The IPL laser can be used to treat small to medium spider veins. Another technique to treat spider veins is with the Ellman radiosurgical device.
Larger spider veins are treated by sclerotherapy. Dr. Cockerham will inject a solution into the veins to collapse the vein in sclerotherapy.
Spider veins vs. varicose veins
Spider veins are tiny blood vessels at the skin surface. Occasionally spider veins can cause some itching and discomfort, but are otherwise not a health problem. Varicose veins are large, ropy veins under the skin surface in the fatty tissue that, in severe cases, can signify other medical problems. Spider veins and varicose veins affect approximately 1 in 2 Americans.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our office offers the most advanced hair removal technology. Learn about our laser hair removal by reading some of these common questions and answers.
Q: How does the LightSheer Diode Laser System work?
A: The system emits near-infrared laser light that is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicle. The laser is pulsed, or turned on, for only a fraction of a second. The duration of each pulse is just long enough to damage the follicle, while the system's unique, patented contact-cooling handpiece, the ChillTip, helps protect the skin by conductive cooling during the laser energy delivery.
Q: What advantages does the LightSheer have over other laser hair removal systems?
A: The LightSheer Diode Laser System was designed from the ground up for laser hair removal, so it has the wavelength, fluence, pulse width, and active epidermal cooling system—the ChillTip ideally suited for laser hair removal. The system is small, compact, and (in some models) portable, so it fits well into virtually every type of existing practices. The system's solid state construction makes it durable; it's state-of-the-art user interface makes it easy to use. Finally, Lumenis has been in the business of making medical and cosmetic lasers for more than 30 years, so we've been able to develop unparalleled service and support—from our extensive training and practice building resources to our stand-alone systems' 24-hour replacement service (not available everywhere in the world). No other hair removal system offers the same combination of product excellence and customer service and support.
Q: Why should I use the LightSheer Diode Laser System rather than the methods I've been using for years?
A: The LightSheer Diode Laser System's design provides for enhanced comfort during treatment, minimal risk of infection, speed and accuracy. Since the system uses a unique cooling handpiece, it minimizes skin irritation that other methods may create. Since it is non-invasive (no needles to penetrate the skin), the risk of introducing bacteria into the skin is reduced. Because the system is fast, it allows for larger areas to be treated, considerably increasing the efficiency of the hair removal process, which allows more patients to be treated during a typical day. Finally, the LightSheer Diode Laser is a precise instrument that can be adjusted to damage only the hair follicle while minimally affecting the surrounding skin.
Q: Does the LightSheer work on tanned or different skin colors?
A: The LightSheer diode laser system safely and effectively treats all skin types (Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-VI) as well as tanned skin. For darker skin types and people with tans, appropriate fluences are generally lower and appropriate pulse widths are generally longer to prevent damage to the epidermis. Using the appropriate treatment parameters, however, people with all skin types can benefit from laser hair removal with the LightSheer.
Q: Are the Results Permanent?
A: The LightSheer laser has been cleared by the FDA for hair removal and permanent hair reduction on all skin types and tanned skin. To achieve a satisfactory level of clearance, 3-5 treatments are typically required.

It’s no secret that as we grow older, time takes its toll.
Suddenly you start noticing fine lines, wrinkles and
sagging, all of which can make you look tired, sad and
older than you feel on the inside. While aging brings
wisdom, there is no reason to look older than you feel.
you want to face the world with a confident, refreshed
and youthful look. In the past, the role of sun exposure
in aging was underestimated. The old sunscreens only
protected against the burning rays (UVB), letting the
aging/cancer rays cause premature wrinkles, poor
texture and tone dyschromia (redness, brown and white
spots).
