Blepharoplasty is the removal of excess skin and sometimes fat from the eyelids.
Surgical risks include:
- post-operative scarring
- granuloma formation
- asymmetry
- undercorrection
- overcorrection with corneal exposure and irritation
More serious and unusual complications include:
- bleeding
- hematoma formation
- visual loss or infection
Blepharoplasty is the term for the plastic surgery procedures that correct aging of the eyelids. Most surgeons feel that eyelid surgery helps a person look more rejuvenated, attentive, and alert than any other surgical procedure they do.

The eyes are the main facial feature that people notice when looking at someone, the "pathway to the soul." If the eyes are hidden by excess skin, wrinkles, and puffy deposits of fat and muscle, they are not attractive and do not project a cheerful nature. Rather, aging eyelids sometimes convey meanness or excessive tiredness. Interestingly, of all the plastic surgery procedures that men opt to have, this is the most common. Most men do it for business reasons, to remain competitive in the job market or at work.

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty
The operation will be performed either in a doctor's office or hospital setting. The operation takes approximately one hour to one hour and fifteen minutes. The excess skin is outlined, and the skin is injected with local anesthetic. Sometimes an anesthesiologist will be present to administer medication to make you drowsy for the procedure.
Excess skin is excised, and the redundant two pockets of fat are removed. Following this, the sutures are placed and remain in place for four to five days until removal by your surgeon. Once the sutures are removed, makeup may usually be applied, but consult with your surgeon. Expect to look black and blue during the first seventy-two hours. This may last anywhere from five to ten days. Most patients take off work for about seven days.
Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Lower lid blepharoplasty removes excess fat which has "herniated" through the soft tissues surrounding the globes. This helps eliminate what we call "the bags" of the lower eyelids. During this operation, an incision is made just below the eyelashes. Excess fat is removed. (There are three small fat pads.) The puffier the eyes, the larger the fat pads. Excess skin and muscle is redraped. Crow's feet can be touched up with the laser or a chemical peel four to six weeks after the operation, or with a BOTOX injection, but sometimes surgeons will do it at the same time depending on the location of the incisions. Most patients return to work soon after the sutures are removed.
Expect to have puffy eyes for about two weeks postoperatively. You may have the continual feeling of dry eyes for a few months until your eyes adjust. Eye drops are usually recommended every two to three hours during this time.
